A really great buddy of mine named Chad owns a an amazing hair salon here in Georgia called Soho Salon. Chad is one of the certified instructors for a type of hair extension called Hot Heads, which seemingly is the BOMB when it comes to hair extensions. A few weeks ago he threw out the idea of gathering a bunch of models, hair dressers, and me to do a shoot showcasing the before and after of the product. It was an opportunity that had to be jumped on because honestly it’s awesome and it really works with our industry. Plus Chad is a such a nice guy, you can’t help but help him out if he ask.
So I invited Patrick Sun, and Sandy Nichols to assist me, and we brought a crazy whole studio there. Beauty dishes, soft boxes, gridded lights and more. The concept was to light it simply though, and make it less about crazy lighting and more about the hair. So to keep it simple I went for a two light setup along with a reflector on most of the photos, or as simple as one light (see photo above of Christina). Big thank you to the beautiful models. 2 Christina’s, Savannah and Connie. You guys knocked it out of the park.
Since it was mostly head shots, I used the trusty 70-200 2.8L II IS for most of the shoot. I did try the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC, Canon 135 F2, and Canon 85 1.2L II for some of the shoot, but the 70-200 provided the versatility for all that I wanted. It really is a kick ass lens. Despite the temptation to do it due to my last few blog post here and here, I didn’t use the 20D and used my 5D mark III and 5d Mark II.
Here’s a gallery of photos of the shoot, and some captions. This shoot was a blast!
